WHAT WE DO
We are a new type of non-profit, providing a platform for motivated people to hack on the world’s most intractable problems - without a profit motive driving our priorities or programs. Based in Silicon Valley, we are an independent, non-partisan organization with personal, hands-on technical and bureaucratic insight into the nature of both innovation and policy. Our overall mission is to bring game-changing technological applications to global security while also working to ensure technology is safely diffused into our society and inspiring younger generations to engage on critical issues facing our society today.
Artificial Intelligence & National Security
We have initiated a series of events focused on managing the national security implications of AI - we call it 2020ai. The objective of the campaign is to build a bridge between those deeply immersed in the AI world and those developing and implementing national security policies at the highest reaches of our federal government. There remains a divide between the two: the relative lack of cross-fertilization and engagement going both ways necessitates greater effort and attention - we will work to ensure that AI does not pose a destabilizing and divisive force in everyday society. Significant work is underway in related endeavors - by scientists, economists, futurists, tech leaders and those in the trenches of our national security apparatus. Our intent is to build on that work, extrapolate out from it, and push for practical measures in an effective, relatively short-term time frame. Check out our specific program page for further information.
We are engaged in a range of cyber-related initiatives, to include investigating the possibility of an anti-DDoS coalition. Industry and government reps have made clear to us their interest in potentially broadening efforts to solve the challenges posed by botnets and DDoS in particular - our value add will be in convening disparate communities to develop novel means for addressing the question of *how* to take, develop, and implement further tools to fight DDoS. Check out our specific project page for further information and stay tuned for additional projects in this space overall.
Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe
Inspired by the tireless work of the Honorable and great statesmen George Shultz and Bill Perry, we are uniquely positioned via our networks in Silicon Valley and around the globe to raise awareness and inspire action on nuclear security and nonproliferation. It is a primary part of our mission to find novel technologies to make nuclear arsenals more secure. We continue to educate international audiences on the threats of nuclear proliferation, work with partners to develop the Citizen Array network that could potentially contribute to CTBT monitoring through the use of backyard seismic sensors for seismic detection, and raise awareness of the risks of nuclear weapons and nuclear terrorism through a variety of civic engagements in Silicon Valley. Check out our specific program page for further information of current initiatives.
