Sophie McCormack, 25, is a Nuclear Policy Associate at Tech4GS and a Nuclear Policy Analyst at London-based think tank, BASIC. At BASIC worked on nuclear risk reduction and Non-Proliferation Treaty initiatives. Sophie was the UK Representative at the United Nations Permanent 5 (P5) meetings in London in February 2020, and invited to speak at the Pugwash annual conference in Doha, Qatar - both on opportunities for further P5 engagement on nuclear issues. Sophie was awarded ‘Best Presentation’ at the 2019 UK Project on Nuclear Issues (PONI) conference, with an invitation to present again at US Strategic Command. Sophie also works on strengthening diversity within national security circles, with roles including Consultant for Girl Security and a Board Member of US Student Pugwash.
Sophie graduated with a First-Class Honours and a ‘Dean’s Commendation’ from the M.A. in Applied Strategy and Security in 2019 from the University of Exeter, UK. Here Sophie engaged in a range of simulations with former senior officials, culminating in leading a presentation on ‘UK Foreign Policy Responses to U.S. Withdrawal from the JCPOA’ at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). Sophie’s M.A. thesis ideas formed a short paper published by RUSI in 2019, ‘UK Political Understanding of the Term ‘Nuclear Deterrence’’. Policy recommendations produced in her thesis Sophie is using to create a UK Parliamentary engagement project. Sophie also holds a B.A. in History and Politics from the University of Exeter.
